June 2010 – Amy Bullard writes…

Don’t be shy...!

As children, we are taught that winning awards are not important; it is the taking part that counts. But throughout our childhoods we are encouraged to work towards celebrated achievements, whether it is simply a Brownie or Cub Scout badge or a football club trophy.

But at what age do we stop working towards celebrated achievements? Why do we forget to honour our businesses with their own version of a Brownie badge? Perhaps it’s down to the traditional reserved nature of the Great British Public – we don’t like to shout about, or bring attention to ourselves. But what if your does company has something to shout about? Entering an award could be a great way to raise your profile.

A quick look on the internet brings up an array of business-related awards, ranging from local community and business awards through to national and trade excellence awards. Being shortlisted (and winning) an award will not only recognise yours (and your teams) success, but will help raise your profile within your marketplace, boost staff morale and add kudos to your brand.

I’m a strong believer in the benefits of winning an award. Over the past three months, I’ve been drafting various award entries on behalf of some of my clients, and the varying results should be announced in the next 4-6 weeks.

At Project PR we have established a strong award writing team. Since 2007, we have cumulatively written 24 award entries (for us as well as our clients) of which 9 of the 17 shortlisted entries have gone on to achieve awards glory! Although this figure will hopefully increase as we find out the results of this year’s batch of award entries.

We as a team are also very proud of being named the 4th most awarded PR consultancy outside of London by The Drum marketing magazine, so we are extremely aware of the benefits a successful award campaign can bring.

So if you think that your company does something better than others, don’t be shy. Use the opportunity to proactively shout about your company and reward your employees. You never know what success may bring….
